Family Photoshoot at New World Phu Quoc Resort

Three generations came together at New World Phu Quoc Resort for a family photoshoot inside their private villa, with a few outdoor portraits added when the rain eased.

When three generations of one family live in different countries, getting everyone together in the same place does not happen very often. For this family photoshoot at New World Phu Quoc Resort, part of the family travelled from Singapore and another part from Turkey. There was a grandmother, her adult son and daughter, and three grandchildren.

The session took place in June, during the low season in Phu Quoc. Rain kept us close to the villa, so instead of going to Khem Beach we photographed almost everything indoors, with a short outdoor series on the terrace. The family had booked two hours, which was a good choice for a group of three generations.

We started with everyone together and then gradually changed the family combinations. The grandmother was photographed with her grandchildren and adult children, the children had their own series, and we also made portraits of smaller groups within the family.

I prefer working this way with a large family rather than keeping everybody in front of the camera for two hours. While I photograph one group, the others can sit nearby, talk or spend time with the children. Then we change people and continue. It makes the session easier for everyone and gives us much more variety than a long sequence of formal group portraits.

The villa was especially convenient for the grandmother. She could stay comfortably seated for some photographs while different family members joined her. Other photographs were made with everyone standing together, sitting on sofas or simply spending a few minutes together in the living room.

A family photoshoot inside the villa

Most of this New World Phu Quoc family photoshoot happened inside the family’s villa. We used the living room, sofas, armchairs, areas close to the windows, the dining space and the staircase.

The staircase gave us one of the best options for larger groups because people could stand and sit at different heights. We did not have to arrange everyone in one straight line, and the photographs immediately looked different from the portraits made in the living room.

Then we moved back to the sofas and chairs for smaller groups. The children were photographed together, the adults had their own combinations, and we made quieter portraits with two or three people at a time.

One villa gave us several distinct settings without asking a large family to keep moving around the resort. This was particularly useful on a rainy day, but I would use the same approach even in good weather when a family wants a relaxed session close to where they are staying.

A few photographs outside

When the rain eased, we stepped onto the terrace for a short outdoor series. The greenery around the villa gave the photographs a completely different background from the interiors, while we still stayed only a few steps from shelter.

We did not try to turn the break in the rain into a trip across the resort. With three generations and children, staying close to the villa made much more sense. We could photograph outside for a while and simply return indoors if the weather changed again.

New World Phu Quoc Resort is located on Khem Beach in the south of the island, so beach photographs are another possibility when the weather suits the session. On this particular June afternoon, however, the villa and terrace became our locations.

June is part of the rainy season in Phu Quoc, and showers can change plans quickly. That was exactly what happened here. We had originally considered the beach, but taking a large three-generation family to Khem Beach in the rain would not have made the session more enjoyable. Instead, we adjusted the plan and kept photographing. This is one practical advantage of staying in a villa at New World Phu Quoc. A family photoshoot can begin where you are already staying, so changing weather does not necessarily mean cancelling the session or spending time travelling to another location. The rain affected where we photographed, but it did not become the subject of the photographs.

Why two hours works better for a large family

For a large or multigenerational family, I recommend a two-hour photoshoot. The photograph of everyone together is only one part of the session. There are grandparents with grandchildren, parents with children, siblings, individual families and many smaller combinations that are worth photographing separately.

With two hours, there is time to give each group some attention without moving everyone from one setup to another as quickly as possible. Children can take a break, older family members can sit down when they want to, and we can change rooms or wait a few minutes if the weather changes.

It also gives the gallery much more variety. Instead of repeating the same group in the same place, we can make larger family portraits, smaller combinations, photographs of the children and more relaxed frames between them.

For families who have travelled from different countries to spend time together in Phu Quoc, that extra time is particularly useful. There is no need to hurry through a gathering that may be difficult to organise again.
