Family photo session at the hotel

This family photoshoot for a wonderful family from Japan took place at the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Resort and Khem Beach.

I wanted to capture more than just beautiful photos against the backdrop of the hotel and the sea, but a true family vacation story. Calm, soft, and lively. Without tense poses, without the feeling that everyone needs to be perfect in front of the camera.

Especially when there's a child in the frame, it's most important not to ruin the family's mood. Children don't have to pose on command; they play, get distracted, run to the sea, look around, get tired, and then get back into the swing of things. And that's where real life comes in, and it's often in these moments that the most amazing shots come out.

Since the family was staying at the Marriott Hotel, we began the shoot on its grounds and then moved to the hotel's Khem Beach.

This combination of locations provides the perfect variety for a series of photos within a single session. These are two distinct atmospheres: first, more elegant resort-style family portraits at the hotel, followed by more relaxed beach family photos on the sand, by the sea, and among tropical greenery.

For me, a family photoshoot in Phu Quoc is always a piece of family history. These aren't just pretty portraits (although I love that too), but photographs that convey a certain period in the life of this particular family - the feeling of the trip, the child at that particular age, the parents nearby, the emotions and adventures you experienced on this family vacation. In a few years, all of this will mean even more than it did on the day of the photoshoot and will remain in your photographs.

The JW Marriott Phu Quoc is a stunning backdrop for any photo shoot. It's perfect for family photoshoots, thanks to its magnificent architecture, lush greenery, and simply stunning beach. I've done many photo shoots at this hotel, and each time I find new, wonderful locations and angles within the Marriott grounds.

We began the shoot with a quiet stroll around the hotel while the child adjusted to the newcomer.

The girl played, blew bubbles, moved around, was distracted, and looked around. It's moments like these that often make family photos feel authentic.

A child shouldn't be reduced to a little model who's obligated to stare at the camera the whole time. I prefer a different approach. I gently guide the family, but leave room for real moments. Sometimes the best shots come not when everyone is perfectly aligned, but when the parents are simply with their child, enjoying the moment of their shared adventure.

Natural family photos with a child

A family photoshoot with a child always follows its own rhythm. You can plan the location, lighting, and route in advance, but it's impossible to plan every emotion. And that's a good thing.

A child might want to play, run, turn away, get tired, or suddenly become interested in something very simple. In such moments, it's important not to pressure, but to observe. Parents can hug their child, hold them, walk alongside, laugh, and help them feel calm.

In this shoot, I wanted to capture not only beautiful portraits but also authentic, small scenes of family relaxation.

These shots look natural because they weren't designed for the camera. A good family photo shoot with children shouldn't feel like an exam. It should be like a walk, where the photographer simply helps preserve the most precious moments.

Why Marriott Resort and Khem Beach work so well together as photoshoot locations

First and foremost, they're close together, and that's their main advantage for a photoshoot.

I love combining the JW Marriott Phu Quoc and Khem Beach in a single family photoshoot because these two locations create different moods, yet they work well together to create a cohesive story. The hotel provides the more elegant side of the series. These are neat resort-style portraits, beautiful details, a calm atmosphere, and the feeling of a well-thought-out vacation. The beach offers freedom. There's more movement, air, and lively moments. The family naturally strolls, plays, sits by the sea, and spends time together. The result isn't a monotonous gallery, but a complete family vacation story in Phu Quoc. It includes beautiful portraits, tender shots with a child, and beach photos that instantly evoke a vacation feeling.

This is a convenient format for families. There's no need to plan a complex route, travel long distances, or overload the child. You can calmly shoot near the hotel and achieve a variety of results.

A Japanese family photoshoot in Phu Quoc

This photoshoot was for a family from Japan, and it was especially important for me to maintain a calm, delicate style. Not all families are comfortable with overly dynamic settings. Not everyone wants loud emotions, constant commands, or the feeling of having to act out in front of the camera. Sometimes the best results come when the photographer works gently and respectfully, allowing the family to be themselves.

I tried not to overload the shoot with posing. I gave simple directions, helped the parents stay close to the child, and suggested natural actions - walking, hugging, sitting on the sand, looking at each other, playing.

This format is especially well-suited for families who want beautiful vacation photos but don't want to feel like they're on a film set. The resulting series was warm and restrained, yet lively. This is how I often envision the ideal family photoshoot in Phu Quoc - careful, natural, calm, and very intimate.

The best time and what to wear for a family photo shoot

For a Khem Beach family photoshoot, it's best to choose a mild time of day-morning or afternoon. Then the light is more pleasant, the sea and sand appear softer, and the family feels calmer. I would recommend avoiding the sun's peak. More specifically, the best times for a photo shoot are 9-11 a.m. and 2-6 p.m.

It's best to choose clothing that's comfortable for movement and that complements the tropical environment. Everyone doesn't have to dress the same. It's much more important that the outfits coordinate and complement the location.

What will add beauty to the shot: long skirts/dresses or pareos flowing in the wind, straw hats, umbrellas, or fans. Any vacation-themed accessories that complement your look are also great.
